Apex Trader Funding vs ROMER
Short answer
Apex suits a manual futures trader who wants a one-time evaluation fee and many accounts at once. It bans bots, algorithms and HFT outright, and its Performance Accounts are simulated. ROMER is built for algorithmic and high-frequency traders who want their code run at the exchange and a path to real capital, though manual trading is allowed as well.
At a glance
ROMER’s terms are planned and may change. Apex Trader Funding’s details are from its own pages, checked on the date above; see the sources below.
How Apex’s program works
Apex’s website blocks automated access, so we read its prohibited activities page in a browser on 30 September 2026. The other Apex facts here come from its pages as we recorded them on 27 September 2026 and from copies saved by the Internet Archive between May and September 2026, and the source list gives the date of each.
Apex Trader Funding is a futures prop firm. An archived copy of its home page from 17 August 2026 showed $844.86M in “Total Compensation to Customers Since 2022”, a figure Apex publishes about itself. The same page advertised up to 20 accounts per trader and one-time fees with no recurring billing.
Evaluations are one-time purchases. Apex’s fees page says “The fee is not a subscription and does not renew. Your purchase gives you access to trade that Evaluation for 30 calendar days.” There are no resets, and a failed evaluation means buying a new one. As listed on Apex’s site on 27 September 2026, a $50K evaluation cost $249 with an intraday trailing drawdown or $590 with an end-of-day one, plus an activation fee of $59 or $90 respectively once you pass. Versions with no activation fee cost $799 and $1,190. On the $50K end-of-day evaluation you need $3,000 profit before your balance falls $2,000 below its highest end-of-day level, and you can pass in one day (EOD evaluations). Apex supports Tradovate, Rithmic and WealthCharts.
Passing leads to a Performance Account (PA), which Apex describes as “a Simulated Funded (Sim Funded) account” in its PA rules. Apex pays you 100% of each approved payout. On a $50K end-of-day PA, each request needs five trading days with at least $250 profit, a 50% consistency rule and a safety-net balance, and the minimum is $500. A PA closes after six payouts (EOD payouts).
The live program is “an invitation-based progression from the simulated trading environment into Apex’s live prop trading department”, according to its live program FAQ. Live profits are split 90% to the trader and 10% to Apex, and all of a trader’s simulated accounts close once they are selected.
Bots, HFT and servers at Apex
Apex bans automation outright. Its prohibited activities page, which we checked on 30 September 2026, lists “No Automation or Algorithm Usage allowed” and gives the reason: “Rewards are intended to recognize human traders actively participating in the learning process, not to reward automated systems executing preprogrammed logic.” That puts Apex among the firms in our HFT comparison that don’t allow bots at all.
HFT is also banned by name, as manipulation of the simulated environment. Apex “strictly prohibits manipulation or exploitation of the simulation environment in any way, including High Frequency Trading (HFT) or any other exploitative strategies.” The same rule covers trying “to manipulate the system for erroneous fills”, and it includes “non-directional bracket trading, where orders are left open on both sides of the market, trying to catch a lucky windfall”. A market-making algo, which rests a bid and an ask at once, would sit close to that line. Apex also says “No Hedging of Any Kind” and bans “Holding both long and short positions simultaneously on the same or correlated instrument”. Holding positions through the market close is prohibited as well.
Because no automation is allowed, the question of where an algo runs doesn’t arise at Apex. Its rules ban using “VPNs, proxy servers, cloud servers, anonymizing tools, or other methods or tools for the purpose of misrepresenting, concealing, or disguising your identity, device, or location”, so a cloud server is banned only when it hides who you are or where you trade from. The page has no separate VPS rule. Our VPS comparison sets Apex’s rules beside those of 11 other firms.
How ROMER differs
ROMER is our funded-trader program for algorithmic and high-frequency traders. Every ROMER term on this page is planned.
Apex’s program is built around human traders, and ours is built around automated ones, though discretionary trading is allowed too. Bots, algos and HFT are allowed at every stage, including once an algo trades real capital. Spoofing and other manipulative trading aren’t allowed, we monitor every order, and the exchange’s message limits apply.
Your algo runs on our hardware inside the exchange’s data centre, so you don’t need a VPS or servers of your own. Our latency design target is under 1 microsecond, against roughly 30 milliseconds for a home internet connection to a simulator, and both figures are illustrative.
Two stages come before real capital. Stage 1, Evaluation, is simulated and lasts at least 3 trading days. Stage 2 is Verification: the algo has to pass a second time, on at least 10 new trading days. Its fills are still simulated, and the stage exists to show that the Stage 1 result wasn’t luck. After that, the best algos trade our own capital on the real exchange. Traders are independent contractors who keep 80% of real profits, and funding isn’t guaranteed.
ROMER is built for futures and digital-asset derivatives. Planned pricing, which may change, is $249 a month for the $50K Pro plan, with no activation fee, a 6% profit target, a 4% trailing maximum loss and a 2% daily loss limit. Apex charges once, while our fee is monthly and covers running your algo on our hardware at the exchange. Our 80% share is below the 100% Apex pays on a PA and the 90% on its live accounts.
Which one to pick
For a manual futures trader, Apex offers a one-time fee, room for up to 20 accounts and 100% of approved payouts on a simulated account.
Apex isn’t an option for an algo trader, since its rules don’t allow bots of any kind. ROMER is built for the traders Apex’s rules exclude, whose strategy is an algorithm, including high-frequency ones.
Quick answers
Can I use a bot or algorithm at Apex?
No. Apex's rules say "No Automation or Algorithm Usage allowed", and HFT is banned as manipulation of the simulated environment. We checked that wording on 30 September 2026.
Is an Apex Performance Account real money?
No. Apex calls the Performance Account a Simulated Funded account, although approved payouts are real money and Apex pays 100% of them. Its live program is invitation-based, and live profits are split 90/10.
Why couldn't you check Apex's site directly?
Apex's website blocks automated access, so we read its prohibited activities page in a browser on 30 September 2026. The other Apex facts come from its pages as we recorded them on 27 September 2026 and from copies saved by the Internet Archive, and the source list gives the date of each.
Can I trade by hand at ROMER?
Yes. ROMER is built around algos, but you can place futures orders by hand too. Those orders are routed through our hardware at the exchange and may be slightly faster for it, though they travel over the network from your computer to our servers first. Our planned fee is monthly, where Apex charges once.
